About Us
The CoSo Club started…well, if you haven’t guessed, in a strip club.
As an Artist the strip club became a thinking space for ideas, especially during the daytime…it wasn’t crowded, the music wasn’t too loud, and being a familiar face when the girls weren’t on stage our conversations at the bar became more about life. What books are you reading now? When’s the next vacation? What are your long term goals?
But as day turns to night the atmosphere changes as the establishment becomes more crowded, security tightens and the coyotes enter, tongues out, breathmints in hand with business suits and briefcases. This is the nature of the game, and the manner in which the dancers have these men wrapped around their fingers is an artform. If you’ve ever been in a gentleman’s club long enough to see this in action I’m sure you’ll agree.
But as the night progresses and each girl finishes their shift, they sometimes exit so stealthily or need to be escorted by security to their taxis. It is hard to ignore the sense of danger they feel while making the transition from “entertainer” to an ordinary person going home to feed their cat. The girls understand the transition but the coyotes don’t, which makes for a dangerous situation outside of the venue.
As an artist I feel an obligation to create work that gives back to where it was inspired from, and with that in mind the CoSo Club artwork is inspired by these conversations and themes. The feelings, what I’ve heard, and what I’ve seen in around my community and the stripclub, and a portion of the proceeds from The CoSo Club will be donated to organisations supporting the end to violence for women in this industry.
Realistically the focus should be on changing the perspective of the men who enter the establishment but while that class is being held and going at a slow pace the aim is to help women defend themselves until that comes.
